Got to be a good day when you start a new asparagus bed. Half crowns half seed to go in in a few weeks, so will take a good while but I hope to still be harvesting in 20 years!

I waited 3 years before i cut my first asparagus spears but well worth it they have been growing strong and producing heaps. Just need to leave a few to go to fern and top dress with compost and manure every year

You are going to love growing this !

We bought 2 year old crowns, half purple half green, this is our 3rd summer in the ground. I can't believe how sweet these taste !

Happy gardening,

We have one asparagus plant, so far. I bought a crown about three years ago and planted it in a big pot. This winter I cut it back and moved it to a corner spot in my vegetable cage. The old shoots died off and I thought I had killed it but recently new shoots emerged. They have grown rapidly but I have not attempted to harvest any - just letting the plant establish. I am not keen on asparagus but my wife loves it so I want to grow it more and more. Happy wife, happy life. I am keen to read more on asparagus.

Hi and yes I am keen to get some asparagus going as well. I have a rock wall That’s is about 400mm wide that’s up against a fence. Wondering what the minimum depth of soil I would need to build to get asparagus going in this spot?
Cheers..Paul

I don’t know the minimum but I know asparagus can easily get down 1m. I put much more compost in the bed because of this.

What does everybody plant in with their asparagus? I have 10 asparagus seedlings and depending on what ideas I get on growing partners will determine where I set up the beds.

I’ve got potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes in the other bed half. Not sure if this is a good idea. Would be interested in inter-planting recommendations.

It’s 50:50 and seperate and the plan is to only use this for the first season and then have 100% asparagus. Now we are in winter most of the asparagus has died off, what can I plant there?

I just cut the ferns down when they yellow off and top dress with old chicken and sheep manure and a little blood and bone then cover with cane mulch. I've heard that they don't compete well with other plant? but i only have a metre by 3 metre bed just for the asparagus.

Yes they are over wintering well with their own mulch plus sugarcane but I wondered if I could use this bed over winter at all. I have about the same size bed, it’s just a shame to not use it in the winter months.

My asparagus plant is still mostly green...I am just waiting for them to die off and I will feed and mulch them. The plant has 'its own corner' in the vegie cage. I have two more young plants to put in - I guess in the spring. My original plant was in a pot for a couple/few years and the roots were maybe 500mm when I transplanted it but I have heard they will go down up to a metre in the garden bed.

I can't see why you can't put some lettuce or radish during there dormant stage anything that would be quick to grow.
