Nila, "modern day chicken" is just a play on words and I used it to describe (jokingly) how chickens are becoming more popular in city living around the world. It's almost becoming a little silly with some people keeping chickens in inner city apartments and making the birds wear a nappy so they don't poop and make a mess - true story! :D

ahh i am part of the new trend i think?, i've got some Silkies, Pekins and Belgians. I have seen a few stories about the chicken nappies but that'd have to be a bit feral! Though, yes, lots of people had chickens in their backyard in the past and it faded out maybe due to how easy it is getting some from the shops. Funny how lots of things that only happened 40-50 years ago faded out and are now coming back. Then it was just normal life, now it's a choice for fun?
