Thought I would share with you how I make a collar/guard to stop collar rot on my fruit trees.
I you are like me and seem to have accumulated lots of old plastic pots.
This is how I reuse them. I use two pots per tree.
Firstly I cut the bottom out of the pots.

Next I slit up one side.

When two are cut they go together like this.

In position on the tree. mulch too your hearts content, no collar rot.
as tree grows they expand and don't choke the tree.
when they get too small, just cut up some larger pots.

hope this is helpful

That's a great tip  I guess it enables closer mulching to the trunk which would be very useful to keep weeds down (as they always seem to come up in that 30 cm mulch free zone around the tree) and plus it'd be good for younger trees or newly planted able to mulch nice and close to protect the new root ball from sun and water evaporation. I like how it expands. Clever idea!

I wouldn't have thought of putting two pots together... I've used one pot before as a trunk protector for native tree tube stock but it wasn't for mulching and I only cut the base out so naturally I needed to cut the pots off as the tree grew .

At first I had my doubts due to the added plastic in the ground - but that last picture... yep; what a brilliant idea!
Thanks yo :)
