As good as the Samsung Gear 2 and Gear Fit are, I'm not convinced they can replace my mobile phone and Endomondo app when it comes to monitoring my exercise workouts.
I love electronic sports gadgets and I've been following the development of smart watches and bands closely over the years. It would be really convenient to have a device worn on the wrist that can track my workout, monitor my heart rate, sync to my wireless headphones, answer or reject calls and text messages, play music, and be sweat proof.
At the moment, I can do all this through my mobile phone and Endomondo app and I've been doing this for the past few years - running with my phone and Bluetooth wireless headphones. Admittedly, carrying a mobile phone or strapping it to the body is a little bulky but it accurately measures my running distance via gps and gives me all sorts of great stats I can view and use to my benefit. Plus, it gives me music, and everything else a mobile phone can offer these days all whilst I'm on my run or gym workout.
What is unconvincing about the Samsung Gear 2 and Gear Fit is firstly you need to have a matching Samsung mobile device and secondly (correct me if I'm wrong) but these devices/smart watches don't track a workout via gps or use a third party app but have an inbuilt pedometer which whilst OK are not accurate and can't map a workout for viewing back later. Unlike my mobile phone, which can accurately map my jogging route and automatically upload this route to the web if I wish for viewing or showing at a later date.
The Samsung Gear 2 and Gear Fit look cool but I'm not sure they deliver for anyone serious about exercising and wanting their workout monitored by an accurate and meaningful electronic device.
Here's the official Samsung video about the Gear 2 and Gear Fit
I believe they will be avail to purchase soon. You can check out these devices at MobiCity (Aust)
or at Amazon (USA)
