    Hi

Just joined up wanted to say Hi. I am recently retired from working overseas as an aid/development worker. prior to that I was in the Army for 22 yrs.

My speciality of remote communications and power systems (solar) and have started my self sufficient life with being a net exporter of energy. I have three solar system at home two with backup batteries. Now it is time to work on being more self sufficient on vegetables etc.

So hi and hope to engage in some interesting conversations.

    Cheers Steve

    Hi there Steve & welcome!
I'm sure all of us here will love to read about & see photos of your solar systems.
I am beginning to toy with the idea of solar but will need batteries, plus of course solar hot water.
Also I have a granny flat that I rent out so if I went off-grid I would need to put a system on the cabin & tenants being tenants, anything could happen to it!
So it's not a cheap start up for me.

Hi Steve (another Steve!) and welcome to our forum - thanks for joining up.

You did one more year than me in the Army :)

Your speciality of communications and energy is very handy for living a self-sufficient lifestyle that's for sure. We have several threads going here about energy etc so your input would be valuable if you feel like joining in some of the discussions.

Cheers mate, I hope you enjoy it here.

Thanks for the warm welcome Mark and ClissAT . Always happy to help out with anyone doing a solar project I am accredited with the Clean Energy Council so I can accredit any systems for Small Scale Technology Certificates (STCs) or help you to design systems.

It's really interesting how often we have co-incidences in our lives.

Today I went to an address in Maroochydore to buy an aluminium ladder advertised on gumtree.
The yard was like a hoarders wonder world! Aluminium stuff everywhere.
He also had several huge genuine Solarhart hot water panels for $100 each along with some frames & some solar panels. He said I would only need one of those h/w panels for my house even if I did occasionally have friends visit & stay. I could also put one on the granny flat roof too but the other bits are what cost the money like the storage tank, pipes, installation, etc.
Then there was a pile of those glass cylindrical heat exchange things. Sorry I cant remember their name.
If only I had enough cash to buy what I needed!
Everything in his yard was up for sale at a huge garage sale tomorrow Saturday 24June.
I said I would ring him back in a few weeks once I have some cash again to see what didn't sell.

Welcome Steve, and thanks for the intro. Great project you've set up at home in the solar system, well done.
Look forward to more of your contributions here in the future.
