Has anyone used the snailbait which is based on iron? Does it work? Does anyone know if it really does break down to harmless stuff. Also is it still poisonous to dogs if they eat it? Does it cope with rain?

Why not skip the snail bait completely & go for beer in a bottle cap?
It doesn't matter what eats it then.

To make a rain proof beer trap, use a 4lt ice cream container.
Cut a U shaped hole about 4-5cm high in one or 2 sides, refit the lid, set on the ground sitting on it's lid. Place a broad plastic jar lid with some beer inside & set under some tall plants like silverbeet.
If you mulch heavily it will pay to scrape some mulch aside so the container sits down a bit into the mulch.
I have found the addition of a couple of small rocks onto the lid as it sits on the ground will help hold the container in place.

To be honest I've never found beer traps work. I've tried them at my other place & never caught any snails. Maybe I have tea total snails.
