Hi Linda and welcome to the SSC forums :)

In my experience/observations roosters don't use the nesting boxes and prefer to perch instead. In my nesting/roosting area I have both nesting boxes and perches many of the hens like to sit in the nesting boxes at night and some including the rooster prefer to perch on the wooden perches next to the boxes. So I guess my opinion would be to provide both options if possible for the chickens.

Hi Linda...how's your rooster going....I have been breeding chooks for years and in answer to your question - roosters do not usually use the nesting boxes.
