G'day,
I have had two rows of Ginger growing in my veg garden. It has started to die off. What should I do? Leave it in the garden ? Pull it up and replant it? I have dug one root up but the bulb is not too big. I would appreciate some help please. I am building a 4' x 2' Built up garden so that I can grow Ginger like Mark's video.
Cheers Perry

Perry, ginger likes a fair bit of water & fertilizer while it is growing.
That could be one reason why the roots are not so big.
Regarding it dying off, it is normal for it to die down at this time of year so you can lift & consume the young roots or leave them to dry off a bit.
Depends what you want to use the ginger for.

Anyway I googled growing ginger in Brisbane & here at the first 5 links.

This youtube video is very informative including ways to store the ginger.

And lastly a forum link to Daleys Fruit.

G'day ClissAT,
Thank you for your reply. I think I will lift it and use some, the rest replant in a different part of the garden. I have a pile of old chook poo. I will dig a trench put the Poo at the bottom cover it with compost. Plant my ginger spread Blood & Bone on top and mulch the row with hard wood sawdust. I live next door to a Timber Mill. Hopefully if I keep the water up this summer I will have a better crop. I am preparing a built up garden. I bought 2 kg of cheap ginger it is a bit dry looking. I have put it in a Cardboard Box until I can plant it after I have completed the garden. I was thinking of covering the ginger in the box with a wet sack, Good or Bad idea?

There seems to be quite a few differing opinions on ginger.
I probably wouldn't go with the wet sack during storage as it's prone to fungus and rotting. You'd normally either keep it dry at room temp a few weeks (max) or in a ziplock in the crisper.
I don't find ginger as easy to grow as either galangal or tumeric (turmeric you could almost throw in anywhere and it will grow...mine's even spreading into some very shady areas)
My first attempt with ginger I dug the whole lot up and then replanted in spring. It all died...just never resprouted. Not sure if it's because the pieces were too small, or the weather still not warm enough. So since then I've actually left it to overwinter where it is. (I do the same with the turmeric and galangal and that's going crazy)
Worked last year...still waiting to see if I get shoots this year. I might try digging it all up again at some point to prevent it getting too congested, but as I harvest quite a lot through the year, I think maybe that's not too much of a problem. They do say to leave it a season or so to become properly established, so it might depend a litttle on the maturity of your plant.
