Check out this video on how to raise carrot seedlings in a weed free garden bed by using plastic sheeting and a clever little shade disc idea.

I have used this method to a degree before (mainly for strawberries) but now that I have mainly raised beds I had stopped bothering with plastic. However, I'm thinking about using this method in some of my raised beds especially since weeds seem to be taking over my garden this summer :D

Great idea but what a massive effort cutting all the holes and disks. I suppose you can use the disks next year but is the black plastic really only useful for one go?

That's true, the black plastic has to be pulled up and replaced and redone so there's still work to be done. But, it does save work on weeding and at this time of year I'm getting pretty fed up with trying to keep up pulling weeds with the extra rain.

I've gone away from furrows and migrated towards raised beds so I'm thinking I would want something a little more stronger than builders plastic to cover my beds. Perhaps some fake turf matting might work? I may be able to get some old stuff from my tennis centre for free and then pre-make the holes and reuse each season. It could work...

Weeds do eat up a lot of nutrients and compete with food crops so I'd really like a way to deal with them once and for all!

The discs do look at little overdone; however, I see why he has developed this method (as pedantic as it seems) it works.
