I thought some maybe interested in one of my other hobbies growing mushrooms Yellow, Pink and QLD Oyster Mushrooms as well as lions mane mushrooms. Just recently i have seeded wine cap mushrooms in hardwood wood chips around the garden and i aim to start growing shiitake mushrooms soon.

A couple of pic: yellow and qld oyster mushrooms and the lions mane some times known as pompom.
The yellow oyster has a slight chewy texture good for stir-fries and soups the qld oyster is a good all rounder, (having mushroom risotto with salmon tonight) Lions Mane mushroom has the same texture as crab meat some say it tastes like lobster or crab it doesn't but it does make a great mock crab cake.

Hi Robbie that's fantastic thanks for sharing. When I was a kid in WA our farm had more field mushrooms than we could eat and we ate lots I wish could find mushies that tasted that good. Would like to hear more about your mushroom growing as we have plenty of space (70 acres.) to grow different things for food. Cheers Dave

Nice Robbie. Where did you get the lion's mane? I've heard it's a good one for mental focus and energy etc, have you noticed any benefits?

I'd love to get hold of some turkey tail mushrooms to grow, have you seen any available in Aus (or maybe you're not in Aus)?

Dave I don't know much about growing field mushrooms or button mushrooms apart from they grow on composted straw and cow manure. Wine cap mushrooms are a good out door mushroom will grow in straw leaf litter and hardwood wood chips if you have shady moist area under a tree in the garden would be good there are some good video's on youtube about them.

Giselle QLD Oyster mushrooms are the easiest to grow I grow them in 5Lt buckets with 8 13mm holes drill around the sides and 2 on the lid thay will grow on chopped up straw, sugar cane mulch or papper pellets (kitty litter) if you are in the Launceston aera try west tamar fungi he also as a stall at the Evendale market he normally has fruiting blocks for sale he also sells tempura mushrooms as well at the market. He will be able give you heaps of advice and suport.

Rachel i buy some of my grain spore from aussie mushroom supply they have fruiting blocks of turkey tale and lions mane ready made up they post australia wide postage is normally included in the price.

If you are growing them in the house the mushrooms can put out a lot of spore into the air if you have a lung condition not a good idea i grow mine in the garage in a grow tent

Do you have any recommended learning resources for growing mushrooms? We have A BTE food forest and have hundreds of different mushrooms that grow on our property since it's a fungal dominated system rather than bacteria driven. I would love to start identifying them and growing specific ones for edibility.

Wow those are some nice Mushrooms! I wanted to ask, do you have any tips/experience/ learning resources for growing Baby Bella/ Portobello Mushrooms? My parents love them and it seems like a really fun project as my mother likes to make stuffed mushrooms (They're delicious if you've never tried them, and definitely worth making) But I'm pretty interesting in growing them and all I can find online is how to grow oyster mushrooms :dunno:

Thanks in advance!

Jpat there is a fd group called Australian wild mushroom hunters you maybe interested in. Sounds like you have agreat area to grow shiitake mushroom on gum tree logs there is a few more species that grow on logs.
There is plenty of youtube video on this.

And Please remember all mushrooms are edible some just once and can be a painful way to go so just dont go picking anything you really need to know what thay are. This is why i only eat what i grow.

Robbie, your mushroom growing knowledge and ability is astonishing!

However I must clarify your last post before someone reads it and thinks that indeed all mushrooms are edible!

What Robbie means is you can eat any mushroom once. However, SOME WILL KILL YOU AFTER YOU'VE EATEN THEM!!

ONLY EAT those you are familiar with. If not familiar, then don't eat them!

Good article, maybe when I fully retire I’ll give the mushrooms a go. Unfortunately, I’m the only one that eats shrooms in the house.

I've wanted to do this but I have some questions. How do you know which to grow? I've been cooking for 20+ years but I have never used any exotic mushrooms..

Annieappletree - have a look at the link above and plant out those wine caps in the garden somewhere, you don't have to eat them! they are VERY beneficial for the garden and also bees. It would be a good place to have a practice start since you already have the spawn.

Hi Vicky:) Thankyou, i saw that after I posted, luckily we just had some mulch delivered. i'm definitely going to try it. And now that you have mentioned that they are beneficial for bees i might put them in the garden where i have my hives, i hadn't thought of it before. its semi shaded in summer, only issue would be keeping spawn damp durning warmer months. thanks again.

Annie, when you put your mushroom patch down lay a piece of garden wire over it, this will stop the birds from digging everything up, especially in the summer when you want to keep it moist.
here is another link from an Australian site about different methods of growing mushrooms
