Tomatoe Blunder

OK, so I accidentally knocked a big green tomatoe off the vine while spreading some fresh mulch this morning. A friend told me to just set it on the counter and it may still rippen. Is this a good idead or should I just look up a good fried green tomatoe recipe? Or, should I just sacrifice it to the compost bin? I am so mad at myself! I have staring at this tomatoe for 2 weeks now. It was the largest one on the vine .

It really depends how green it was when picked.
But yes they can still ripen off the bush, if you put it in with some bananas the ethylene that is given off will help it ripen quicker. Which is why you should store bananas away from other fruits etc

My origin is from the UK and my father grew tomatoes for our green grocer shop , I recall him ripening green tomatoes in a draw surrounded with woollens and of course dark , so yes in Queensland not a problem the ripening bananas give off ethelene gas naturally ( commercial growers pump this gas artificially into confined spaces to force ripen fruits) we however have a little more time on our side and are not under the fiscal pump . Also nothing wrong with eating a green tomato.
If it is mature but still not ripe, it will taste quite good.
If still immature it will be a bit tart but will fry up nicely with an egg for breakfast.
