Avozillas are a huge breed of avocado about 5 times the size of a standard fruit weighing 1.2kgs on average but are they worth buying and would you buy one?

Apparently, they retail at about $12 per kg so that's pretty exy and probably more than buying an equivalent in standard avos so one would think that once the novelty wears off they might be difficult to move off the supermarket shelf - they certainly wouldn't sell too well at Coles Caboolture lol...

Me personally, I might buy one once :p

I read an article about it yesterday. To be honest I am not a big avo eater, as avo is too rich for my palate - though I am currently growing an avo tree from seed, just for the fun of it.

Generally the average avos available for sale here in South Africa are quite big in size (well much bigger than the average one shown in the pic in the article you referenced), but I have not yet come across an Avozilla available for sale in my local supermarkets or veggie shops, which is weird, since the Avozilla originally comes from South Africa. Perhaps they are only exporting and not selling locally, I will have to investigate and see if I can find any selling locally, then we can compare pricing...:)

Yes I saw the interview with this farmer.
He said they were the biggest in the world but he must have a short memory.
There used to be a variety called Linda which was huge and ball shaped.
Maybe not 1.2kg.
But they were watery tasting with soft pale flesh which was prone to be rather grainy and had a huge seed.
In the end no one wanted a Linda because they were expensive and no guarantee the flesh was worth the money.
I wonder if these will be the same.

I buy these every year and they are great.
Very creamy and I make guacamole.
I find there are less insect damage on them too. Is it because of the variety or the care they get I'm not sure. Worth trying.

If they are available I will get one and post pics

I've visited RSA twice and can affirm that your price pound for pound for avos is cheaper by 4 x at least! I tried to eat one for breakfast every morning when we were over there :D
If they are available I will get one and post pics
That'd be good to see
