If you were looking for a substitute to blueberries that is much easier to grow then the Ceylon Hill gooseberry is a good choice.

The shrub is very easy to grow, requires little fertiliser or extra care, and one it reaches maturity produces masses of delicious berries.

The berries are similar in size to a blueberry and they do look similar also but I have to be honest and say they don't taste similar at all. I think the fruit tastes more closer to a fig than a blueberry but at the end of the day comparisons do it an injustice because it should be enjoyed for what it is and that's a Ceylon Hill Gooseberry, which is very sweet and nice to eat.

Anyway, you can watch the video here and ask questions or make comments in this thread.

Full sun or part shade.

Blueberries are more tart and I would say superior in taste but the Ceylon gooseberry is similar in look and size and taste good in its own right.

I've finished making the jam and it turned out great but I had to strain it to remove most of the seeds because when concentrated there were too many. Lucky I did a test batch with a handful first.
