I now believe I have found my problem with this incubator. After successfully using it in the house a couple of times, I moved it to a back shed. My first hatch there was very poor and the subsequent one had all the problems above.
This shed was fed by quite a long extension lead and contained a few fluorescent lights with the old style ballasts. I now have reason to believe either voltage drop (because of the length of the lead) or fluctuations in the supply when switching the lights on/off caused the problems with the electronics. I have since moved the incubator back to the house and trialled it. It now seems to be working perfectly.
Cheers,
Bill

{scroll down to see the attached manual in post #5}

I am currently working with this incubator, so far I have no manual with and have watched videos too see what others have done. We started it last night and the last update is that the humidity is 58 % and there has been no turning operation as it should turn every 2 hours.

We are thinking to put 6 eggs in and to turn them manually 3-4 times a day.

Any input or advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Mariette Johansson
Hi MJ, I currently have the small version of what you have...the AL is for low temp alarm, AS is high temp alarm, AH is low humidity alarm, CA is to calibrate the internal thermometer, HU is humidity setting , and HS is the high temp setting and LS is for the low temp setting...If you hold the set button for a few seconds you will see the display changes to letters that represent the settings I mentioned...use the plus or minus button to scroll through them...when you are on the one you want hit set again and then you can change the number setting, after setting it to what you need hit the set button again and all it a few seconds to time out and it should go back to the main temp setting...my only problem is the CA for calibrating it, I don't know wether to add or take away when it's running to high...remember all these settings just flash when they are above or below what you set them at, no self correcting...I hope this helps some...if you know anything about Calibrating a C thermometer to match with my secondary Fahrenheit thermometer I would be grateful!! Good luck

I also meant to mention that if you're machine is just a bigger version of mine...make a mark on the eggs and you will see that it does turn them, it's just such a slow gentle process that you can't see it happening! Now that is if yours has the tray and the little metal rod that fits into the slit on one end of the tray..opposite the temp probe! Cheers

I gave up with the internal calibration on the incubator and just calibrated the standard temp with a separate quality thermometer. In other words, if the front panel readout was higher or lower than 37.5 C it didn't worry me as long as the independent thermometer showed the correct temp - I adjust accordingly off that.

If I had a better quality incubator I might calibrate the unit but these cheap ones are inconsistent anyway...

Dear Mark,
I just Get a new HDD 56 Incubator. yesterday i put a digital Thermometer (rossmax-TG380) inside the incubator on top of auto turner, display show the Temperature 38.1 C and Humidity 69% and the digital Thermometer show the reding 37.1C, any Advice please.

Thanks & Regards

Greetings from Dawson Creek, BC, Canada (where the Alaska Highway begins).

I am going to try and start with some chickens (Chantecler I hope), as a way to "till" the soil. I just received a HHD-32 egg incubator, and almost disassembled it. I went through some calculations, and the thermal mass of 32 medium chicken eggs should be about 3 times the thermal mass of the part of the incubator devoted to holding, heating and turning the eggs. I am guessing the heater is about 75W. I was looking around BangGood, and they had 40W pencil type heating elements for 3D printers for a fairly good price. But, I would think that 3D printers, or Arduino or Raspberry Pi type projects would have spare parts. The main fan is a 12025 (12V, 0.25A). I forgot to measure it, but it looked like a standard size. I ordered a 4020 blower (40mm wide and 20mm thick) to put where a couple of the egg rails mount, to increase the air turbulence in the egg chamber. If people are looking for thermometers or humidity meters, there are lots of examples in the Arduino world for that. Instructables being one place to look. But, if you have a niece/nephew who likes electronics, these are easy projects for them to put together. I'm not sure who sells this in Australia, but Sparkfun and Adafruit are big in the USA. Lots of Arduino clone stuff at AliExpress. But I intend to build a chicken tractor type thing for the chickens to live in, at least in the near term. I got a manual for a 56 egg unit with my 32 egg units, but it was nice to read that these things all behave in more or less the same way.

Hi Gord,
Welcome to the forum.
Do a dry run first, and get used to the settings, and make sure you get stable temps and humidity. Then when you put the eggs in, check the temps with a thermometer or IR temp gun, and adjust accordingly.

I didn't have a thermometer with enough accuracy or proper range, so I now have what purports to be a big soil thermometer (fair amount of thermal mass). I believe the humidity started at 29% about 1 hour ago, but with heating the humidity dropped and now just reads error. I could add water to the bottom to see if that works as it should.

It took a bit more than 10 minutes to come up to the setpoint, which would appear to be 38C. The highest the displayed temperature has shown is 38.1, immediately after reaching setpoint. I would expect largest overshoot to happen on first occurance. The lowest temperature displayed after reaching setpoint, was 37.6. And that was just after the highest overshoot. Both of which would agree with what I talking a process control class many years ago.

This is with no eggs (or bags of water for thermal mass) in the incubator.

With respect to adding humidifying water to the unit, are people adding anything to the water to suppress bacteria/fungi growth? I was thinking hydrogen peroxide might be the most innocuous.

Added water to the humidity channel(s), and at some point the humidity alarm stopped. A couple of minutes ago, the humidity was up to 50%.

You don't need to add anything to the water, as it doesn't stay in there long enough to be of concern. I found I was topping the water up at least once a day.

Thanks on no need to worry about bacteria/fungi growth.

I've been adding water on and off much of the day, and getting significantly above 50% humidity could be a problem.

50% humidity is fine, except maybe the last few days, when the chicks are about to hatch. Then they need closer to 65-70% humidity.
You will probably find the humidity will be a little higher when you have the eggs in there; that was my experience.

Is there a trouble shoot manual ? We have had this for 2 years and never had the patience to work it properly but I have now decided to give it a go but the humidity is EE I assume this is an error code does anyone know?

Hi Mariette, and welcome to SSC!

I know this might be a silly question but are you sure the egg turner is properly plugged into the unit? Check the plug and connections and make sure it isn't turning by placing something on the turning tray (like a bottle top) to see if it is moving at all as it is sometimes hard to tell. If the automatic egg turner isn't turning you should get a refund.

The humidity can be regulated by adding water to the bottom plastic tray into the raised compartments. Just add a little water to start with (about a cup) and see how the humidity reads after about 1 hour - try and keep the humidity between 50 to 70 % so you may need to add more or less water as needed.

It's also a good idea to calibrate the unit and make sure the reading on the unit (particularly temperature) is accurate. Do this by using a separate thermometer placed inside the unit on top of the auto-turner and make sure the temperatures match within about .5 of a degree. You'll want the temp of the unit to be as close to 37.5 C or 100 F as possible.

Run the unit for at least 24 hours and monitor the temp and humidity once it remains stable you can then add eggs.

If you can't get the auto-turner to work you can still operate the incubator manually if you wish, as you say, by turning the eggs regularly at least 45 degrees.

If you are having trouble with the acronyms on the control panel let me know and I can add what they mean here.

I got one of the 48 egg turners for Christmas and am just now going to use it. I think my temp and humidity are fine, but it does not look like my egg turner is working. Is this a quick and obvious motion, or is this a very slow turning process that I would notice it at exactly the 2 hour mark? I just put an unfertilized egg in it to see if I can notice a difference in the position at the next 2 hour mark. Thanks!
