I have not grown chillies. They look good. Nice size so you could use them as a capsicum.

Nearly a month since I last posted. Harvesting big and small tomatoes. No fruit fly stings. It must be the 4 Guinea Fowl we got 8 months ago. Picked last of onions. Still picking small zucchini, potatoes, sweet potatoes. Asparagus is coming on really well now, picked 10 or 12 stalks today. Strawberries are really good, though the slugs chew into 5 or 10 a night, I picked 20 good ones today. The ginger is just starting to show a couple of sprouts. At this rate it will be winter before I see what it loks like. Never grown it before, I got enthused by the videos. We are icking dark graes to. Bugger though I can't eat them. Gave todays harvest to family. My fridge and freezer are chockers.

Ha, I started this thread, and have forgotten to post myself.
We've had a great crop of Mighty Red Improved, Black Russian, and Tommy Toe tomatoes, but last week's 44 and 46 degrees virtually killed them. Have to wait for my other varieties to grow now.
Picking a few cucumbers, and plenty of zucchinis: green, Lebanese, and yellow crookneck. Sweetcorn was a bit disappointing. Beetroot and carrots nearly ready. Picked my first Jack Be Little pumpkin.

Nicely done.
We've had too dry weather and I've been too busy, neglecting the veggie patch so the cucumbers and corn dried out but there's more coming.

Oooo black beans! Do you have to do anything with these before using them? I presume these are the same that you buy canned or dried? (I've never seen them available as seed and these are prob my favourite bean as I do a lot of Mexican style food. (Anything with chili is fine by me)

Well my gardening was a bit hit and miss this summer. Great black jack zucchini, but all the other squash died (too hot and dry) inc this year's pumpkin, watermelon. Only one mango on the tree (is only a few years old though) still no lychees. Banana going great guns, but no fruit yet. Lots of pawpaws, but having trouble keeping water up to them, so hopefully they'll still taste ok.
The capsicum, tomato and eggplants all developed some sort of ?rust (nothing too visible on the leaves) which turned the skin of the fruit thick and brown, like sun damaged skin. One of the chilies is trying to make a comeback now! Sunburnt pineapples (still got one ripening). My corn did ok this year though - I put it in as early as possible so have already harvested that. One bag out of 7 grow bags worth of potatoes did well. The rest...well, I was experimenting with position and mulching, and clearly got a lot of that wrong! Next year I might do what Kate does and rest the beds over summer! It's quite frustrating when all that work goes out the window!

It's been a strange year for curcurbits, apart from zucchinis. Cucumber hasn't been too bad, but doesn't flower as much in the really hot weather. Pumpkin, rockmelon, and watermelon have grown plenty of vines, but little flowering. Apart from a couple of small butternuts and one Jack Be Little, there are only 2 rockmelons forming at this stage.

This hot weather sure is affecting most gardens & plants.

I heard that when its really hot it is best to trim cucurbit vines regularly.
Apparently commercial growers will go along with a disc plow & cut the vines by half.
This has the effect of making more of the available moisture build up in the bit of vine length remaining so the plant thinks times are good so it can flower.
But the aim is to cause forking of the vine therefore flowering to occur a shorter distance from the root.

I have to add that I struggle to shorten my vines by half especially when the good leaves are on the half that will be cut off!
The lesson is to cut the vine sooner while it is shorter, rather than leave it to struggle for ages before removing the good part.

The only harvests i am having are, as usual, herbs and borage, any kind of salad greens, cherry tomatoes grow like weeds here so I and the pup always seem to have them to eat. Surprisingly the alpine strawberries - mignonettes and pineapple - that I nurtured from seeds are growing and spreading. So I am harvesting a small hand full everyday. I am giving away any excess i have of all mentioned. I am about to give up on trying anything else ever again. seriously. I put the big tomatoes and sweet peppers under a plastic awning so none would wash away in the rain. Tomatoes once again being attacked by the flea beetles, keep forgetting that now the peppers need watering, and the garlic and several kinds of onions and beets just wont grow for me - except the plain and garlic chives which have struggled to grow, again from seeds but seem now to be taking off. Also, plants that should have flowered by now just wont! carrots on the other hand appear to grow anywhere with any companions and I just cant keep up with the concept of continuous planting LOL. I am feeling down today because of the the problems I am having but getting out the neem oil for the tomatoes and mulling over what to de about the peppers - other than watering them. geesh. Also picked up a grow bag - cheap cheap cheap and no shipping from aliexpress - and am anxious to plant some potatoes.
not terribly relevant here, I am a real promoter of aliexpress. You wouldnt believe what you can get thru them and I have ordered something costin on about $2USD and small like plant tags. the key is to know what sort of pricing you are aware of (for example i can actually pick up some items not produced in/but soldin Ecuador cheaper here than on aliexpress) and look for free shipping. Cant be impatient or need something right away because it takes forever. You can also choose what country. E.g a close friend orders his diabetic tester strips from India thru aliexpress. just passing this on.

I've never heard of aliexpress, sounds like alibaba which is a wholesale online merchant.
We mostly have ebay & gumtree.
But i'll check out aliexpress to see if it is here in OZ & whether it can show me stuff made & sold here.
That's something ebay struggles with it seems.

I picked this stunning nashi pear and made a tasty Asian salad out of it.

Slice the pear up in fine slithers and add it to some chopped iceberg lettuce then: dressing - combine about 3 tablespoons of lime juice with 1 tablespoon of fish sauce and a half teaspoon (or so to taste) of raw/brown sugar mix until dissolved and coat the salad well.

You could also add chopped chilli, coriander leaves, chives etc for a more interesting or exotic taste :)

Great. It’s 4:30 in the morning and now I am hungry looking at that beautiful salad...

Here in Texas, it is late winter. I am about to harvest cabbage that grew really well this year and make sauerkraut for the first time this weekend. I am also getting lots of lettuce, spinach and chives.

I picked the biggest Zucchinni yesterday. It is at least 18 inches to 2 foot long. I have this zucchinni in a pot. Every 3 days or so I soak it till it would float if it didn't have roots. Just amazing. Doing this has also got the ginger to send up leaves. Yeh

My gherkins are flowering but nothing happening, yet near them the capsicum are really doing well except for something chewing round holes in them and laying lots of black eggs.
