How do i find a good place to be self sufficient?

Thanks for that Jennie. We are coming home to Oz to start our journey soon. You words inspire and encourage. It's been for us about focus on the goal and let time do it's work... Just like in a garden hey. "Seasons and Times" I also believe strongly in Providence.

Handy vegetable planting guide for Brisbane and South East QLD

Thanks for sharing this with me/us Johnm64... It's a great app and site. I also like the " Grow Veg " planner as well as they include Aussie climatic info and they aren't purely Northern Hemisphere oriented. In case you haven't seen it this is the link to their 30 day free trial. I have been...

Question OK... So what different protein based foods can ...

Its really worth watching the whole video from Geoff Lawton. ;) One of the main keys for me was that they didn't use any grains at all to feed the chickens. It was a really interesting concept of how to get multiple outputs from low/no cost inputs. I also know that some folk who get green food...

Question OK... So what different protein based foods can ...

Sure Worms would be for sure. In one of those Quail videos by the lady in France, her quails fight over a worm or two in the green house. Mark... Have you had a chance to see Geoff Lawtons video on raising laying chickens without grains at all? What about videos or info on using Chia Sprouts...

Question OK... So what different protein based foods can ...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Mark. Your on the ground experience is valuable. I hear you about the things in the three bullet points. The intent of the string was to be collaborative and see what other protein based food sources we could come up with and if there were any videos out there...

    Heliciculture - Snail Farming

Sounds great. What about... Shiskebabs with Fresh Snails + Prime Rib Eye Chunks each separated by Sweet Yellow Capsicum and Large Button Mushrooms glazed with your Piri Piri Sauce or some Spicy Chilli Glaze served on a bed of Basmati or Pilau Fragrant rice? BBQ on The Webber? Side servings of...

Question OK... So what different protein based foods can ...

So after watching some of the vids on the string on Heliculture, my 10 year old son has asked... (with his strong Manchester accent) Dad, "What other protein based, home grown foods can we grow for raising our poultry when we get back to Australia" to save some money on feed... (I like the...

    Heliciculture - Snail Farming

Yeeehaaarrr :yahoo:... Perfect business for outback supplemental cashflow ... > Redneck Maggot Wranglers <. :eat: I would think if your pole was tall enough and the bucket sealed tight with holes only for flies to enter and not other night time critters, this would be a great way to supplement...

    Heliciculture - Snail Farming

Me too... The first and only place I've had snails was at the East Rand Mall in Jo'Burg, Sth Africa. They were super yummy and very very filling. Actually I remember that is not totally true. When I was about 3 we lived on 1.5 acres in Toongabbie, Sydney. My mum and aunty caught me in the storm...

    Question Worm Farm?

That's the goal isn't Mark. When nature takes over and does it without us... Then we have moved into a self propagating, self reliant position. Awesome mate. Well done!

Home grown roasted eggplant recipe (Italian Inspired)

Tomato paste yes big time... Yet I can have Ketchup/Tomato Sauce no issue. However, if I water tomato paste right down I'm OK. It was weird finding out. When I did and I cut them from my diet I barely get colds and flu now days. Dropped loads of weight too as my body was not in fiight mode all...

Which is best real soil or aquaponics for growing vegetables and fruit?

I think leafy vegetables, which are very highly water based might work well in AP or HP systems. I would like to see a taste test done between same lettuce varieties and something like Rocket or Mustard Greens. Something with some zing. Just to compare the taste and especially the zing content...
