Mark do you breed chickens for meat as well as eggs? My husband and I are thinking of starting to breed chickens for meat for our own family. I don't know how we will go, I have viewed your instructions, I suppose wont know until we give it a go!

Jennie, when we hatch out chickens I grow the birds and slaughter the roosters for meat and keep the layers for eggs but I don't specifically grow meat chickens (well, I haven't yet anyway). Meat chickens are different to laying hens; however, you can get breeds which are utility birds (bred for meat and laying) such as Light Sussex which won't lay as much as a dedicated layer but is heavier and better eating. The best eating chickens are the dedicated meat chickens.
