How awesome are those!? I had never heard of pine cone ginger before. Must hunt some up for my yard!

I saw some vids on youtube bought 10 rhizomes last spring, and voila ... pine cones this year. I'm going to shampoo with this tomorrow and see how my hair reacts

You will have to let us know the results. I checked it out and the recipes I found included Castile soap, so I am guessing the "awapuhi" (sp?) alone isn't enough to clean your hair?

My wife likes ginger as well. I think it is time I planted some. Does it take up much room in the garden bed? How many rhizomes would be recommended, on average, for one person to consume?

How much is up to you. It spreads very well, so you could start small and let it multiply to fill an area. I am a lazy gardener, so I grow mine in containers for easy harvesting. Also I bought my rhizomes at the asian market so the price was right !

This place is bad for my pocketbook. I love the look of the pinecone ginger, so I gave in and bought some rhizomes. ;) Now I notice there is one called "beehive" ginger. Hmm.....

I have seen the beehive also, but am not sure if it creates the shampoo .... they look similar ... the only person I have reached said not edible and no to shampoo also. You may be able to call suncoast tropicals in Australia to learn more and let us know

I think it would just be a great cut flower plant. Super cool looking! But with the awapuhi, I will have three different beds of ginger, so I need to show SOME restraint!

That is very cool!!! I already have turmeric in one of my raised beds, so my wallet is safe on that one. Just don't tell me about all sorts of really cool and exotic turmeric blooms out there!

of course there are ... the white turmeric is different than orange. I just not sure about the black, blue or others that are more ''medicinal'' than edible

i have tried it, and it smelled great. I put the squeezed ''juice'' thru a sieve and that eliminated 90% of dirt but it left the liquid kinda runny. it did make my hair feel clean. So yesterday I bought unscented liquid castile soap. Am going to experiment with amount of lather, portion ratio in the next few days and let you know .... so far, so good. The next step is to figure out how to ''process'' the root and whether that will strengthen the wonderful scent ( that is actually the part that Paul Mitchell uses )

But if the soap and juice is ok, I will wait to harvest root until after this brutal heat wave is over

Have you seen the variegated shell ginger and the giant shell ginger yet ??? I have been growing the variegated in my courtyard since childhood. It is stunning especially in bloom. Only recently learned it is edible.

Now you are just being mean. ;) I had better hold off for a bit. I have several things coming this way, and I'm not sure I even have room for the stuff I already have!
